Resilience Trail

GRIT Unleashed™

The Moment

Gunner does not know the motivational language we use around grit.

He does not know the slogans.

He simply keeps working.

When something is difficult, he adjusts.

When he loses the scent, he searches again.

When the task requires patience, he stays with it.

Watching him reminds me that grit is far less glamorous in practice than it sounds from a stage.

It looks like another attempt.

The Leadership Lesson

We often celebrate perseverance after success.

The story sounds great once we know how it ends.

Living through it is different.

Grit can feel repetitive.

Uncomfortable.

Frustrating.

And frequently unremarkable.

It is doing the preparation when nobody applauds.

Having the difficult conversation again because the first one did not solve the issue.

Recovering after a failed attempt without pretending the failure did not hurt.

Continuing to improve when the immediate result does not justify the effort yet.

But grit is not blindly pushing forever.

Real grit includes adaptation.

Persistence says, “I’m not quitting.”

Judgment asks, “Do I need to try this differently?”

Strong leaders need both.

On the Trail

When progress stalls, resist the two easy extremes:

Do not automatically quit.

And do not automatically repeat the same action harder.

Step back.

What have you learned?

What needs to change?

What is still worth pursuing?

Then go again.

Gunner reminds me that determination is not measured by never losing the trail.

Sometimes it is measured by the willingness to find it again.

Trail Question

Where do you need more persistence—and where does persistence need to be paired with a different approach?
